PROGRAMS
AGRICULTURAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT The Agricultural Environmental Management program assists farmers to maintain farming as a profitable and environmentally sound enterprise. Cost shares are available through state funded grants. Participation is voluntary and begins with completing the Tier 1 Survey.
CANANDAIGUA LAKE WATERSHED INSPECTION The purpose of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Inspection program is to maintain Canandaigua Lake as a drinking water source. Five municipal water purveyors make up the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Commission which is authorized by the NYS Department of Health Law to enforce watershed rules and regulations. The SWCD administers the inspection program on behalf of the Watershed Commission.
ONSITE WASTEWATER TREATMENT Municipalities within Ontario County contract with the SWCD through the Uniform Procedures Program to provide soil investigations and inspection of onsite wastewater treatment systems in portions of Ontario County that are outside of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed.
SOIL EROSION and SEDIMENT CONTROL SWCD assists municipalities, contractors and residents with soil erosion and sediment control measures associated with land development and construction projects. The SWCD provides site plan review and construction monitoring services to ensure compliance with DEC stormwater regulations.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Conservation education programs are available to school groups, municipalities, civic groups, businesses and individuals. Annual events include Conservation Field Days for 6th graders and the Envirothon competition for high school students.

  • The annual Tree and Shrub sale offers low-cost native species seedlings for home owners and farmers. Information and assistance in using trees for wind breaks and buffer strips is also available.
    A rain garden will help you manage stormwater runoff from your home. Rain water from roofs, driveways, patios and other hardscape areas can cause flooding, erosion and drainage problems. Rain gardens offer an aesthetically pleasing way to control drainage.
    Wind breaks can improve your home and farm's energy efficiency. Vegetated buffer strips help protect water courses from the adverse effects of development, agriculture, or other land uses.
    SWCD's annual Fish Stocking sale offers species suitable for farm ponds.
    The Agricultural District's Law provides for reduced property taxes for land in agricultural production by limiting the assessment of such land to its agricultural value. The SWCD completes Soil Group Worksheets for land owners applying for an agricultural assessment.
    A perfect home for New York's state bird is available at a reasonable cost from SWCD. Bird houses are designed to enhance brood survival.
    SWCD offers assistance in farm field drainage layout, barnyard management, silage leachate management and other related issues.
    Road and stream bank stabilization helps maintain healthy streams and conserves soil. SWCD offers advice and assistance in designing stabilization projects.
    Farm pond siting, maintenance and management assistance is available through SWCD.
